The Three Robbers

by Tomi Ungerer

One Potato Review

Here is a books that feels smuggled past censors – where three robbers can be at once so menacing and magnanimous. Think about it: is there ever any sign they have quit their plundering, pepper-spraying ways, even after they’ve adopted all those orphans? On the contrary, that childcare looks expensive, and those robbers never do take off their robber hats, or disavow their wicked ways. Robbers? Philanthropists? You decide, because Ungerer won’t, indeed the tone of this story is so godlessly pragmatic that we shall probably never see its kind again.
