One Potato Review
Here’s hoping the Charlie & Lola gravy train might somewhere grind to a halt so Child can spend more time creating her highly stylized and extremely funny stories for characters like That Pesky Rat and Hubert Horatio, who may be insufferably entitled, and speaks like a hyper-educated prat, but who nevertheless cheerfully adapts to the news that his moneyed, aristocratic family is running on fumes. Some readers may find Hubert (and Lola, for that matter) a little precious, still there’s nothing vaguely snarky about this story, which insists on seeing the best of people’s resiliency beneath their respective surfaces. Featuring championship ping pong and a family patriarch turned enthusiastic doorman.
