The Books

Wynken, Blynken and Nod

by Eugene Field
Illustrated by Giselle Potter

One Potato Review

From a classic poem (first published in 1889) about three little imps traveling through the sky in a Dutch wooden clog, and to her everlasting credit, Potter doesn’t try to make sense of any of this weirdness, but dives right in. The little flying herring are particularly luminous in this reading, and while they are certainly meant to represent stars, and Wynken and Blynken two eyes, there is nevertheless a diversionary jumble to Potter’s illustrations that seems true to the spirit of dreams.
