The Boy Who Loved Words

by Roni Schotter
Illustrated by Giselle Potter

One Potato Review

Here is a clever, and deeply felt, case for the inherent beauty of a perfectly chosen word, which finally (and not altogether successfully) evolves into something resembling a fable, when the boy of the title meets a girl to supply the music for his lonely libretto. There are some awkward moments here (a genie rising out of an amphora sounds distractingly like Jackie Mason), and this boy is more interesting without becoming legendary, but the words are so honestly tantalizing and luxurious and scrumptious that his fascination with them – and his burden – feels entirely right. With scattering type-written confetti, and otherwise lively illustrations by Giselle Potter at her old-world-scenic best.
