Gorky Rises

by William Steig

One Potato Review

“What the doodad was keeping him up there?” On the surface of it, this is nothing more than the story of one frog’s experiment with magic potions, but oh, the ingredients! Attar of roses! Who would have thought? Steig would have thought. And of “cloverous” smells, and “a world flooded with gracious light” and “a canopy of swarthy clouds” – in short, the billowy details that finally give flight to even the simplest of yarns.
