The Books
One Potato Review
Consider the proposition that children are usually a heck of lot more interesting when they don’t know they’re being watched. Stella and Sam are both charming, but they don’t seem to care what you think. It’s a pretty neat trick that Gay has pulled off. Each of these natural explorations – of snow, sky, forest and sea – will probably ring true to parents and children familiar with some of the many variations of fearfulness – and whatever it is that replaces it. There’s not a false page here. Stella’s orange hair alone is possibly enough to sustain the attention of very young readers, but the unaffected companionship represented in these pages is a valuable reminder for every age.
