The Books
One Potato Review
The games a boy plays – being a cowboy, walking in puddles – are unsupervised here, accounting for something like an eery peacefulness before the storm of growing up. You could read this book to a one-year-old and they will get it, and you can read this book as a thirty-year-old – and you will get it. Those older may even recognize Goennel’s artwork from New Yorker covers; there’s more than enough sophistication beneath her simple shapes and primary colors. A story to savor, preserve, or remember, depending on your perspective.
