The Wonderful Bedmobile

by Achim Broger

One Potato Review

Here is the odd, big-hearted and joyously fanciful story of Professor Dinkle, who cooks up a plan in the middle of the night to convert his bed into a flying machine. “Good morning, idea,” he says when he wakes, and that is about the tone of things here: stretches of narrative logic must be occasionally suspended, though it’s all of a piece with the wandering spirit of this story, which is translated from German, and feels already exotic enough to gain the benefit of our doubt. With a shipwreck, a striped robe and “armfuls” of island food.
