The Books
One Potato Review
Sentimental, but hard to resist. Lucas creates some of the most purely beautiful illustrations in children’s literature today: you could paper your walls with these pictures and probably never feel very pessimistic again. The robot in this story may be down in the dumps at the beginning, but his animation doesn’t arrive without a struggle, and it doesn’t end with his uselessness. Yes, this is a story of friendship and all that, but some little ambiguities – about sacrifice, despair and making the best of the inevitable – hint at larger aspirations.
