Here is the classic-sounding tale of an impetuous young pelican too cool for his roost, but it’s the pictures – of octopi and groupers and porcupine fish, and of all of the species of birds who take turns offering Gerald advice as he drifts and wafts and plummets “like a frantic puff of milkweed” – it is these images by Mamoru Funai which are likely to stick for a lifetime.
