This was a baby gift for my son.  I’d never read it before but I instantly loved it.  The language is brilliant and fun.  The only problem with this book is the ‘moral’ of the story.  In the end, the character decides to solve his problems by getting a big bat (and using violence).  Yikes!  Not exactly what I want to teach my son.  However, the book is so much fun that I keep reading it to him and I just hope he doesn’t internalize the part about the bat.

I can’t disagree with any of this, and yet I’ve read this book to my kids a couple of hundred times. Thidwick the Big-Hearted Moose is another minor Seuss with a similar problem - a shocking last page (which I think accounts for its minor-ness), but I guess I was also able to rationalize both of these books on the strength of their verbal brilliance - “It’s the mid-winter Jicker!” I’ve often heard myself responding to the threat of a thunder storm, whether anyone is with me or not.
The bat always freaked me out a little too, like karate or nuclear deterents. But if I had to put a moral to this story, I’d say it has more to do with the grass always seeming greener or something, that ending notwithstanding.
