Chicken, Soup Boots

by Maira Kalman

One Potato Review

For older readers mostly. It’s easy to get lost here, between all of Kalman’s trippy phrasing and funny names and secondary wonderings – but, oh, the characters you’ll meet! No incomplete list can do justice to the breadth of callings in this book, but Kalman’s imaginings (or reminiscences) include a paraplegic composer, a tin-can wearing performance artist and an apparently eight-armed short-order cook. On the final two pages younger readers may even catch a glimpse of some future version of themselves: a ventriloquist, a word yeller, a do gooder, a dot dotter, a mathematician…. Inspiring and inspired.
