This story is twelve years old and it is still the best and most thoughtful in a very weak field. Too often books about the first day of school settle for coaching. This title may be bland, but there’s a lot to look at here - not least the panoramic landscapes. Birds feature beautifully, and there isn’t a cynical hook in the plot.
