Bella’s Pockets

by Lisa Bauso

One Potato Review

Handmade with love. A mother and daughter reflect: who the heck was that hoarding little seven-year-old? Some of these treasures retain the evocative powers of Proust’s madeleine – “The prettiest horse I owned.” “That was a secret key.” A silver pistol: “Scandalous.” – some are a little baffling – Army men: “I never really played with them. They were just small, little people I thought I should adopt.” – but many are tokens of the childhood she’ll probably never outgrow – “I have no idea why you wouldn’t keep it,” Bella comments on a rusty looking stone in the shape of a kidney. “It’s just amazing. I have no idea what it is, but it’s cool.”
